In numbers: The Iberian Peninsula's ultra-clean power

Here’s some good news to start the day:
In 2024, the US economy continued to decouple from emissions, a trend that’s been in place for two decades. Rhodium Group estimates that emissions edged 0.2% lower while the economy grew 2.7%.
Europe will likely get more electricity from wind than coal from this year onwards, according to Reuters.
Traffic on New York City’s busiest streets dropped 7.5% and travel times fell during the first work week of the city’s congestion pricing plan, Bloomberg reported.
The US supreme court has shot down the fossil fuel industry’s attempts to kill a Hawaii lawsuit, which is seeking to hold the sector accountable for an alleged decades-long misinformation campaign, the Guardian reported.

In the south-western corner of Europe, businesses and households are powered by some of the cleanest electricity on the planet thanks to the region’s wind and solar boom over the past decade.
Renewables and nuclear accounted for 82% of the electricity generated in Spain and Portugal in 2024, according to data collated by research group Ember and analysed by The Progress Playbook.

More than 17 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2024, a 25% increase from the year before, according to a tally by research group Rho Motion. That equates to roughly one in five new cars sold through the year.
China remains the main driver of the EV boom.

The Chinese province of Zhejiang has reached a world-leading electrification rate of 51%, partly thanks to its shift to electric vehicles.
The province’s low electricity tariffs, rather than policy, largely explain Zhejiang’s success, according to research group RMI.
